This post-humous release is the culmination of the music Ricky and I (with others) completed over a 20 + year period.
I was ready to present this compilation to him last Tuesday morning but he didn't make it. Turns out he didn't make it through the night. So this is a compilation of his vocal work, sometimes solo and sometimes with other artists as noted track by track.
Suffice to say he was an astonishingly gifted singer, an extraordinary improviser, a very intuitive, untrained talent. Not to mention a fabulously complex and funny man.
He would quickly assess the musical landscape, deliver a vocal, and that was that. There was never a second take. More often than not, he made up his lyrics on the fly. Mostly in English although he might sing in Spanish or invented language. He was a box of chocolates, you never knew what you would get, but it would always be a pleasant surprise. He was a fabulous mimic across all manner of accents.
But he was a troubled soul. He fought his battles with the booze and won. He cared for the intellectually disabled. He loved his kids and grandkids. He loved his friends and I feel privileged to be among them.
He told me many times he was the most talented person I'd ever work with and with all his quirks and flaws, he was probably right.
Still coming to terms with his loss, that will take some time. With great thanks to my partner in musical crime Laurie (Lefty) Sinagra, here are the Ricky Files....
