When I signed a publishing deal over 30 years ago, it was put to me that I could write songs for anyone. As obvious as that seems, I had been writing for my band Tall Tales and True, trying to work on music for the band within self-imposed parameters. So I started to think outside that box. I knew a few jazzy-type chords and I love a good melody, so I was free to use whatever sounds and ideas came to mind, without even thinking if it might suit the band.
I had this idea of the band name Matty D and the Lovetones, so I wrote songs for them.
In putting these songs together, I had to sing them for the demo, the way I was hearing it in my head. This required some rethinking from the way one belts out rock songs in pubs.
So this compilation has been over 30 years in the making. Some of the more recent tunes I have played as a solo artist, but for the most part these songs have been on a shelf, gathering dust - for 30 years in some cases. Consequently there are a few issues here and there, given that they only existed on a cassette that was roughly mixed at the end of an all-night recording session. I hope the songs transcend the odd sonic glitch here and there.
They are mostly first takes and the arrangements are pretty sparse. But i like the feel of a first take, it is usually the truest representation of the emotion in the song. And I also like to get the idea across with the minimum amount of musical information too. I don't have a lot of patience with endless overdubbing, just what is needed to get the idea across effectively.
So I'm bearing my soul on this collection. I'm not as smooth as Matty D, I invented him to get this music down. I hope you have as much fun listening to him as he did making it.
